The biggest value of a foldable iron box is that empty boxes can be folded and stacked upright one on top of another, saving considerable storage and transport space. For years of reliable use, the key is the design of the folding structure and daily maintenance - not just how thick the plate is.
A foldable box generally consists of a bottom plate, four side panels and hinges. The side panels connect to the bottom plate through hinges and latches; when empty, the four side panels fold inward and flat, and the whole box height can be pressed very low. When needed, stand each panel up one by one and fasten the latches to restore a complete box. Hinges and latches are the core of the folding structure - their material and welding directly determine service life.
When selecting, focus on three points: first, whether the hinges are fully welded and rotate smoothly, folding repeatedly without jamming; second, whether the latches engage properly - once the side panels are upright, the latches should hold firmly so they do not loosen when the box is full; third, the locking method when folded flat - whether empty stacked boxes stay stable and do not come apart. If these three points are solid, a foldable box will easily last five years or more.
In daily use, empty the box before folding and clean oil and debris off the side panels to avoid sand grains grinding into the hinges and accelerating wear. Fold smoothly flat; do not force-press or let heavy objects fall on the folding hinges. Add lubricating oil to the latches periodically to prevent rust seizure.
The foldable iron boxes produced by Nanjing Tongnuo (Xintongnuo) use reinforced hinges and latches that can be repeatedly folded and stacked.
